Hardee's Uniforms, circa 1980

NOT MY PIC--From college yearbook.

I already have a photoset for the Hardee's in which this pic was taken. It is now an adult novelty store, strange as it seems!

These chaps were college students with me, tho' not known to me personally.

But the uniforms are worthy of note.

Long John Silvers, 2_wm

Long John Silver's, now co-branded w. A&W, 600 Block Santa Fe, Olathe KS

I don't seem to recall this store having the drive-thru order sign right in front of the main window like this. I think they have reconfigured their drive thru, for some reason.

KFC, Olathe, 4_wm

Olathe had a really old KFC, possibly old enough to have had the square front, with the four-sided tall roof, also called the "coffee grinder" look, by some.

By the time I saw it, in the early 80's, it had a lean-to, built on the front, and a big oval window, or so I recall. Maybe the entry doors had oval windows, like an old house. Anyway, it was time for a change. This store has been here several years now.

Me--At Taco Bell #1235, summer 1986

At Taco Bell #1235, summer 1986

The stores still had Spanish tile on the front of the counters, and lots of wood accents. The Salsa Bar was in full swing. Those didn't last long, as they lost a ton of money.

I found a treasure trove of old pics, from 1986-87, and am uploading just a sampling of them tonight, as it's late.

Antiquated Production Line, freshly clean, after closing the store, Mar. 1984

Original production line, store #1235, opened 05-20-1976, shown 1983-86, unsure. Well, the corner of the pic says March 1984.

Check out the old time soda fountain heads.

Safeway, 420 E. Santa Fe, 2_wm

Sorry to revisit a store whose photoset is already familiar, but this store has been elusive to capture, for me, as either the trees are fully leafed out, and hiding it, or if the trees are bare, the sky is gray and terrible.

A few more detail architecture shots then, of this dear old Marina style store, with the laminated beams, built probably 1959 or so.

McD's, 618 E. Santa Fe_wm

Posted two rather dramatic night shots of this store, awhile back, but had no daytime shots at all. This store is only 2-3 years old, at most. The Bing.com view shows the ground, after the old was already scraped, and the new was just starting. www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&cp=qgdky672zhhd&am... E Santa Fe St, Olathe, KS 66061-3722

This is the site of one of the old, very long stores. I worked here as a college kid. It had plainly been expanded on the front, once, if not twice, to enlarge the dining room, bringing it right against the street.

McD's used to sometimes have six or eight parking stalls in front of some stores, either 3 facing 3, or 4 facing 4. When they would expand, these would disappear, and the building would be close to the sidewalk.

The store that sat here, built in probably 1970, had a sort of "Grandma's Country Kitchen" decor in 1981, including a little square room, fenced off from access, with a pot-bellied stove! The booths were pea green, and there were jars of stuff all over, (glued down, of course,) to suggest grandma's "spring canning" of peaches, etc.

Later it had a train station ticket window motif, and had a small kids dining area, where Grimace was on top of a half-circle table, and a life-sized Ronald was nearby. It never had a PlayPlace. It had the long hallway to the restrooms, with an interior brick wall, suggesting that access to the bathrooms had once been "down the sidewalk," but that they had enclosed it, bringing a wall out even with the roof edge. It also had the full basement, common to stores of that vintage.

Taco Bell, Olathe, 1

Transition time. This manager has his maroon uniform, but the jaunty paper hat.

And some very large diameter glasses!

Taco Bell, Olathe, 2

This manager looked a bit like country singer Barbara Mandrell. Here she is using white onions and green onions, as well as tomatoes and cilantro, to make a massive batch of PIco de Gallo.
